College Prep Overview
We designed this two hour workshop to help parents and students get a sense of the path to college. We will show you what the college and university options are: public and private, in CA and beyond, competitive and less selective. We share with you what students need to have done by fall of senior year to reach their goals: standardized testing options, course work, interviews, etc. Our goal is that you leave with a sense of what is important to think about and what can be left behind. That way, when you get bombarded with information about college, you will have the confidence to know that you are on the right track.
Workshop date and location to be announced.

We will discuss the value of establishing timelines and honoring deadlines. We will offer suggestions for extracurricular and summer activities as well as information about standardized testing and test prep. We approach these topics with an eye toward writing the strongest possible application. Special sessions will cover parenting the college applicant and financial aid. There will be time for questions and answers as well. Students will receive a comprehensive resource binder as a tool for continuing work at home.

Essays That Shine
Almost every college asks its applicants to submit one or more essays. The essay, sometimes called the personal statement, presents an important opportunity for you to distinguish yourself from other applicants. Our "Essays That Shine" workshop provides a forum for you to probe your past and mine your experiences for the stories that best reveal your unique characteristics. We will help you find your voice so that your essay lingers in the minds of the admissions committee long after it has been read. This three-hour workshop will be team taught by Kate Augus and Joanne Levy-Prewitt. The essay created in the workshop will satisfy the majority of public and private college prompts.
Students will: |
|
| |
- Receive a Pre-Workshop Questionnaire to help them organize their thoughts before the workshop
- Brainstorm, write, revise and edit in a three hour session
- Enjoy immediate feedback from Kate and Joanne
- Learn how to "recycle" their essay to work for several colleges
- Students can also opt for post-workshop help by appointment (extra charges apply)
